Is there anything more heartbreaking than an unlived life?

The reality is we frequently put our ambitions on hold. Whether it’s pursuing fulfilling work, healthier lifestyles, or better relationships.

We postpone pursuing our true desires until some vague day in the future.

We treat time as if it’s in infinite supply and always under our control.

All the while, the sun moves around the earth unceasingly, and we have less time that we did the day before.

This is the dangerous and deceptive nature of procrastination. It steals from us.

Finding an online writing job that pays the bills isn’t always straightforward. I battled to land the kind of writing gigs I yearned for when I started. All I wanted I wanted to do was earn a living doing something I loved: writing. But, for a while, that seemed impossible. No one responded to my pitches. Except for that one client on (I knew I was in trouble when he said my bid of less than $0.10 per word was ridiculously overpriced.) Then things started to happen in a rush.

Becoming a better writer is a tough business, isn’t it? We can falter and feel desperately inadequate on the most hopeless days. Writing demands so much of us, and we’re confronted with our own limitations every time we sit down to do the work.

But, don’t despair because there is hope for things to get better. After writing professionally for 15 years, I’ve found truths about writing that moved me forward when I felt totally stuck.

It feels like we’re always busy.

Some days are a blur: before our feet hit the ground, our minds are racing. From there on in, every moment is filled with heavy traffic, goals set the day before are hijacked by some or other urgent priority.

But at the end of the day, what do we have to show for the busyness?

Many times, this is the nature of modern professional life. It’s as if the yearning we have to do something meaningful is at odds with the experience of work in the 21st century.

Why is it so hard to stick to new habits?

It’s a predictable cycle.

You start strong. You’re fully committed to changing your life. You’re going to eat better, exercise daily, or write more.

Then life gets in the way, and your motivation starts to wane.

Before long, you end up right back where you were before: frustrated, defeated, and embarrassed.

You’re filled with a sense of failure and a desperate yearning for more.

You’re deeply worried you’ll never achieve anything meaningful at all.

It’s like building better habits — building a better life — is a never-ending battle.

It’s the same old story.

You’ve finally managed to carve out some time for a project you really care about. You sit down and stare at the screen.

And then it begins.

Your mind wanders. As hard as you try, you can’t focus deeply enough to do any meaningful work.

You bring your attention back to the present, but it’s not long before the cycle begins all over again.

In the end, all you can do is abandon your efforts.

By that time, it’s become a pointless exercise. You’re frustrated and your performance is declining along with your concentration.
